Student assessments provide a key source of educational data and are increasingly in the spotlight due to changing education policies. More and more, standardized assessments have become “high-stakes” tests that are linked to specific consequences for schools and/or students. This lesson discusses the history of and current policies behind standardized testing. It also describes the different types of standardized assessments, how they can contribute to decision-making, and their limitations.
