In the last lesson you learned about research-based activities that can strengthen phonological awareness. In this lesson you will be learning to help students make the link between the sounds in words and the letters on the page. You also will be learning about different tools that are used to assess students' phonological awareness, and what indicates that a student may be at risk for difficulties in learning to read. Finally, you will be learning more about providing intensive reading instruction for students who may be at risk for or have been identified with learning disabilities.
Before you begin the presentation, please read the two required readings, as they will lay the foundation for the rest of the lesson. You should also print out the handouts that are available with this preview. There is a student outline guide for you to use for taking notes. There is also a list with descriptions of various curriculum guides, supplemental materials, and assessment tools that can be useful to you in teaching beginning reading and spelling. You may want to put these in your own reading resources notebook for future reference.
At the end of this lesson, in addition to the Lesson 4 activities and assessments, there are activities and an assessment that cover the different aspects of beginning word reading that you have learned in all four lessons.
