Rationale and Requirements for Accommodations

Image 01 Middle and high school teachers are challenged to design and deliver instruction that responds to a variety of mandates deriving from both inside and outside their classroom. First, there are political pressures for teachers to ensure their students achieve high scores on state and local assessments considered high-stakes assessments because they presume public accountability and unadulterated learning and teaching. Second, teachers are required to teach an enormous amount of information to students as dictated by local, state, and/or national sources. Many teachers feel the amount of information they are required to teach is overwhelming and difficult to accomplish successfully with the range of diversity of students in their classrooms. Third, included within the range of diverse learners are students with mild disabilities who require accommodations. For teachers who are unfamiliar with two federal law requirements for these students, those requirements are overviewed in Lesson 1 with emphasis on the impact these laws have for general education teachers. Finally, an overview of effective instructional methods for all learners is provided, with an emphasis on how effective methods benefit all students, including those with mild disabilities.

Before proceeding to the presentation, be sure to print out the handouts for this lesson.
