- Definition of Accommodations and Adaptations
- These terms have different interpretations according to a specific state
- Accommodations: learners receiving the same content and difficulty of curriculum with flexibility of instruction and assessment
- Adaptation: learners who receive the same content as other students with a minor change in ifficulty level of curriculum with flexibility of instruction and assessment.
- Other terms may be used in different school systems
- The most importanrt aspect of using accommodations and adaptations:match and challenge the learners with mild disabilities.
- Characteristics of learners who require accommodations and adaptations
- Learning Disability (lD)
- Students with LD have problems receiving, remembering, and/or expressing information in traditional auditory or visual formats.
- Characteristics may vary among students with learning disabilities
- Teachers should keep in mind that for each LD student there is evidence that he/she has average or above-average capabilities
- Emotional Disturbance (ED)
- ED students have mental health issues in a significant way with their learning.
- Federal definition of emotional disturbance
- Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
- ADD and ADHD may occur concurrent with a learning disability or
- ADD or ADHD may not be identified until middle of high school years
