A Student-Teacher Dialogue That Mediated Scaffolding

Teacher: Josh, I see you’ve started Step 1 and you are beginning Step 2. You haven’t written anything for Step 2 yet. What do you plan to do to get started?

Josh: I’m not sure. I know I need to use some information from Step 1, but I’m not sure what information to use.

Teacher: You’re right. You do need to use some information from Step 1. Let’s look back at the framework you have for moving through all the steps. Check off all the things you’ve already done for Step 1, and look for the cues within Step 1 that tell you what to use in Step 2. See if referring to the framework helps you find the information you need.

Josh: OK. I’ve checked off several of the items already, but I’m not sure I understand how to tell the difference between _______.

Teacher: I see. Let’s review the ways to distinguish _______.

Josh: Now I see. ____ is the information I take to Step 2. I’ve got it. Thanks.

Mediated scaffolding would not sound like this:

Teacher: Josh, you need to get started on Step 2. Do you know how to get started?

Josh: No.

Teacher: You need to take ________ from Step 1 and use it to do Step 2.

Josh: OK. Thanks.
